Understanding Pack Weight Ratios
Carrying too much weight increases injury risk, speeds fatigue, and degrades decision-making. The "percentage of body weight" metric is a useful guideline because larger people can carry more absolute weight without the same proportional strain.
💡 General Guidelines
For most hikers, 15-20% of body weight feels moderate. Above 25%, the load begins to significantly impact gait, balance, and energy efficiency. Above 33%, injury risk increases substantially and should only be attempted with proper fitness and support.
Recommended Limits by Trip Type
- Day Hikes: Up to 20% of body weight — emergency gear, water, food, layers
- Overnight Trips: Up to 25% — add shelter, sleeping system, cooking equipment
- Multi-Day Treks: 20-25% — longer food carries, more water, extra layers
- Expeditions: Up to 33% maximum — technical gear, longer supplies, rescue equipment
Tips for Reducing Pack Weight
- Weigh everything — eliminate "just in case" items over 200g
- Choose ultralight shelter and sleeping systems
- Carry only the food you'll actually eat
- Share heavy items (rope, cooking gear) across the group
- Leave unnecessary gear at base camp
